Former Senate Minority leader in the 10th Senate Senator Simon Mwadkwon Fwet who represented Plateau North, has offered his views for a better Nigeria, centered on the need for creating new states, empowering women, and constitutional reform.
Mwadkwon strongly supports the creation of new states, such as the proposed Lower Plateau State. "This initiative will promote more inclusive governance and participation, allowing for more effective representation and development at the grassroots level," he said during a recent interview with select journalists. at the Senate Public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution for the North Central zone, held at Crispan Hotel in Jos between Friday July 4 and Saturday July 5 2025.
The senator advised women to be more proactive in seeking for elective positions while also throwing his weight behind the proposal to reserve seats for them in the national assembly "Women's representation and participation are crucial in shaping the country's future," he emphasized. "By promoting women's involvement in governance, we can create a more equitable and just society."
He said "A comprehensive review of the 1999 constitution is necessary to address emerging challenges and ensure its relevance to current needs," he said. "We need to update outdated laws and address constitutional lacuna to prevent crises and promote stability."
"We must align our laws with global trends in governance and address issues that have arisen since 1999," he added.
Mwadkwon emphasizes the importance of clarity on succession and other critical issues, which is essential to prevent constitutional crises and promote stability.
The senator believes that, "Women must support and empower themselves to effectively advocate for their rights and interests. by working together and promoting collective action, women can play a more significant role in shaping Nigeria's future and driving positive change."
